Raise awareness for breast cancer.
I actually got up and straightened my hair. I've gotta stick to this daily picture thing. I wish we had awesome parties here that I could go to and know that I wouldn't get caught. That's impossible. I was thinking today that I only have 3 semesters left of school before I graduate. That's crazy. Note: I blackout when I get really pissed off. |

Breast Cancer Detection
Journal
posted by morethanazodiacsign 1 yr 1 mo ago
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, here is some information about how breast cancer is detected so you can find the method that's best for you. The following information comes directly from the American Cancer Society's website.
How Is Breast Cancer Found? The term screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease like cancer in people who do not have any symptoms. The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances that treatment will work. The goal is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are the most important factors in predicting the outlook |

Cancer Facts of the Week: March 2 to 8, 2008
Journal
posted by morethanazodiacsign 1 yr 8 mos ago
The amount of money spent on cancer treatments in the US in 2007 was approximately $206.3 million. A woman's risk of developing breast cancer is higher if has has inherited the genetic mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, has a family history of breast cancer, has high density breast tissue, has hyperplasia (confirmed by a biopsy), and has had high-dose radiation treatments to the chest area. In 2007, it was estimated that 40,910 people would die of breast cancer (450 of them being men). Some symptoms of breast cancer include: an abnormality on a mammogram, a painless mass, changes in breast size/shape/feel, and nipple abnormalities. If a woman experiences breast pain, it is most likely from a benign condition and not cancer.

Cancer Facts of the Week: February 24 to March 1, 2008
Journal
posted by morethanazodiacsign 1 yr 9 mos ago
In 2007 there were an estimated 1,444,920 new cases of all cancers and 559,650 deaths caused by cancer in the United States. Highest amount of new cases is prostate cancer for men (218,890 new cases) and breast cancer for women (178,480 new cases) Yearly mammograms are recommended once a woman reaches the age of 40, but a clinical breast exam should be done about every 3 years if you're in your 20s or 30s. After a woman has been having sex for three years (but starting no later than age 21), she should begin getting screened for cervical cancer (Pap tests every year or liquid-based tests every other year).

My Aunt Kathy had breast cancer, thay found it two years ago. She was doing fine, she wint throw chemo and radiation, lost all her hair, and was pretty sick, but she kept her nickname of Smiley the whole time. Many other cancer patients would come up to her and tell her how much of an inspiration she was. she pulled threw it, and got better. She finished treatment in January '06 and the doctors said she was clear. Around March or April of 07, she started noticing the lymph nodes in her neck swelling up, so she set out to see a doctor. The doctor couldn't find anything with the CAT scan. Aunt Kathy was still worried, so she sought out another doctor. They did more test and found out the cancer was back. They say it's incurable, and she'll always have it, all they can do is get it into submission for a |

Got your attention?
Good, because... October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the world. Note: parts of this journal were originally posted here last October, but since it's such an important and timely topic, much of the information and resources have been updated. Breast cancer is a serious issue, for all women are at risk for getting breast cancer. As you get older, your risk increases. Assuming you live to age 90, your risk of getting breast cancer over your lifetime is about 14%. That might sound scary, because it means that an average of about one out of every seven women will get breast cancer over a 90-year life span. You can also look at it another way: A 14% risk means there's an 86% chance that |

Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act (PLEASE SIGN!!!)
Journal
posted by prettyininkz 2 yrs 6 mos ago
Please take a moment to read this and sign the petition. Thanks, Melody A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery. Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women. There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.
